Well, it's always sad to see one go but it's nice to look forward to the next one. The GearHead BMW went to a great guy in California named Charlie M. who is enjoying riding it around! Our BMW made it all the way to Lake Tahoe on one of it's shake down runs and is scheduled to do the Fort Sutter Road Run as I type! The kids did awesome and the new owner is happy. Life is good!
A big thank you to the club and Charlie It has been a amazing experience for me & the students! I have a line on the next GearHead bike already, stay tuned!

This is the moment we ALL get excited about and dread in the same breath! The moment we try to start a bike we've had in pieces for far too long. Will it start? Did I miss a critical bolt? Is there oil!? See for yourself! High School students take a neglected old bike and make it LOOK GOOD!
While progress is slow we are still making headway! Cleaning, polishing and replacing parts and fasteners as we go back together. This is the tedious work that gets no glory from most but AWAYS makes the bike shine in the end! These students rock! I hope we make the May 19th WST car show.
Blasted hubs, polished rims, stainless spokes and zinc nipples, what a bunch of work! The students did great cleaning the motor so it could be installed along with other parts that need cleaned before reassembly. This is going to be a NICE bike!
Yes we're at it again, more paint! The frame and misc. parts receive a coat of black urethane via a young gearhead. Also check out our updated parts list needed to complete this fine ride. Thanks to the members who donated money, parts and time to this project so far! These students dig it!! After a long Winter break we're looking for donations for the above parts! Please e-mail me for specifics and/or mailing address/drop off location if you want to help. A update and more pictures coming shortly after our Jan meeting.
As you may know BMW exhaust nuts are notorious for being stubborn! Having a weld shop next door with a CNC plasma cutter sure comes in handy. I showed the students a picture of what we needed and they designed, cut and used it!!!! These kids rock! Stay tuned for more pix. as we move closer to getting the motor out.
So we have the BMW disassembled far enough to paint some major parts such as the tank and fenders. We still need to do the pinstripe but that can wait till it is good and dry.
The students and I fired this BMW after 19 years of sleep! To put that into perspective, before these students were born! They were super excited about that. We rigged up a temporary gas tank with petcocks and all, ran a 50:1 2 stroke mix just to make sure the top end was lubed, that's why it smokes a little. Rick and Cheryl Baker joined us and provided the pizza, THANK YOU GUYS! It's import to remember how we started on the old bike path and what we can do to make sure WE pass it on! Three dedicated students to the rescue of this old beemer!
We came up with a game plan, As close to stock as we can do affordably. Made a parts list A wants list and had some pizza!! Stay tuned on how you can help with parts!!! Next time we meet, we will try and start this thing up after 20 years of hibernation. |
